Juicing has become one of the latest health trends, with juice bars popping up all over across the United States. Juicing a variety of fruits and vegetables is a great way of consuming healthy foods one might not otherwise eat. However, not all juices are equal. Carrot juice is often found in many of the juice mixes these day, and for great reason – it’s full of health benefits!
It is not just a myth that carrots are great for eye health. Carrots and their juice are chock full of beta-carotene and vitamin A (containing about 75% of the recommended daily amount per 1 cup of juice). When there is a deficiency of vitamin A in the body, it can cause difficulty seeing in dim light. Carrot juice and the beta-carotene is also beneficial to reducing the risk of developing macular degeneration in the elderly. Research has found a 40% decrease in development of the disease in those who consumed carrot juice regularly. The vitamin A in carrot juices helps strengthen eye sight, and prevent conditions like night blindness.
Prenatal and Postnatal Care
Depending if the woman can stomach the idea of carrot juice at the time, carrot juice should be consumed regularly throughout pregnancy and the postnatal time thereafter. The nutrient-rich characteristics have several benefits on the child’s health and development. Carrot juice consumed during pregnancy helps support the immune system, cleanses the liver, and maintains the health of membranes, supporting the health of the mother. It is a valuable source of vitamin A, which is crucial to help fight infections in the newborn child. The calcium content of carrots is also beneficial to development of the baby’s bones and teeth. Nutrients from carrot juice are also transferred to the mother’s milk. As a result, consuming carrot juice can improve the quality and quantity of breast milk during nursing.
Water Retention and Healthy Skin
Carrot juice can act as a natural diuretic, helping to eliminate excess fluid in the body. Many diuretic pills require the addition of potassium supplementation in order to prevent unwanted potassium depletion. However, carrot juice already contains this important mineral, along with certainnphytochemicals that act as effective natural diuretics. In addition to reducing bloat and edema, which can make the skins dry and weep, carrot juice and its levels of vitamin A is beneficial to healthy skin. Regular consumption of carrot juice helps to reduce inflammation and redness, and can even prevent wrinkles and scarring.
Another great health benefit of carrot juice is its support of a healthy heart. The presence of potassium in carrot juice works to lower blood pressure and oxidative stress, relieving the tension and lowering the chance of stroke and heart/artery damage. The presence of potassium also works to lower LDL cholesterol levels, supporting a healthy heart as well. The amount of vitamin A in carrot juice works to maintain the lining of internal organs, preventing any damage that could be inflicted by free-radicals.
One of the most popular uses of fresh juicing these days is doing a ‘juice cleanse’. A juice cleanse is one way to rid the body of toxins and waste, either to start a new for a diet or just get back to regularity. Carrot juice definitely supports this effort because it literally cleanses the body of many toxins. Freshly juiced carrots cleanse the body by targeting the liver and gut. Carrot juice breaks down the toxins in the liver, and sends them to the intestines and kidneys to excrete them. These toxins, waste, and indigestible material would normally make one feel sluggish and slow. Carrot juice can support a healthy “restart” and set up for a healthy diet. One 8 ounce glass of carrot juice consumed regularly as an everyday detox will work to keep the body full of nutrients, and not toxins and waste.
